As Laurier’s campus newspaper, we have the most in depth and up to date coverage on the university. We are independent from both the university and students’ union, allowing our coverage to be critical and raise awareness about issues that would otherwise not be publicized.

In recent years, we’ve placed an emphasis on covering news not only on campus but in the Kitchener-Waterloo community, as well as nationally. While students remain at the heart of our newspaper, we recognize the importance of our role in the broader community and the need to pay attention to the world around us.

The Cord is managed by an editorial staff consisting of 12 editors and an editor-in-chief. We also have six senior staff positions that take on lead roles in their departments. Most importantly, we rely on the work of our volunteers in writing, photography, illustrations, graphics, videography, copy editing and web development to create the content that is published daily online or in the weekly print publication.

We are supported by advertising revenue and a student fee, which is collected by WLU Student Publications. Volunteers of The Cord are considered Student Publications volunteers and are able to utilize the opportunities available in the other departments, including Radio Laurier, Blueprint Magazine and Keystone yearbook.

We are also a member of the Canadian University Press (CUP) that provides conferences and training opportunities for our staff and volunteers. Our content is made available on the CUP newswire and is reprinted across the country. Similarly, The Cord reprints articles made available on the CUP wire when we are unable to cover issues in other cities and provinces ourselves.

The Cord is an award-winning publication, placing second in the 2010-11 Canadian Community Newspaper Association (CCNA) in the category of best campus newspaper. We strive to be the top news source of student newspapers in Canada, both in print and online. Ensuring our volunteers receive the training and opportunities to produce quality work is one of our biggest assets in achieving this goal.

Regardless of your interests, from graphic design to writing, there are many opportunities to volunteers at The Cord and Student Publications. A list of our applications is available online. For further inquiries or ideas, e-mail editor@thecord.ca.
