It’s been a good year for Laurier’s hometown freshman females.
After Waterloo’s Emily Brown was named the women’s soccer Ontario University Athletics’ (OUA) West Rookie of the Year in late 2011, Shelby Kurt has garnered the same distinction, though more for her work with a basketball.
Kurt was named the league’s top freshman in late February, and the Waterloo Collegiate graduate was one of only two non-Windsor team members to collect any OUA hardware.

Coming back from a 12-point deficit in the second half, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team survived a scare from the Guelph Gryphons to hang onto a 75-73 overtime victory at the Athletic Complex Wednesday night.
With the win, the Hawks move on to the Ontario University Athletics' (OUA) quarterfinals against the Brock Badgers on Saturday.

Saturday afternoon at the Athletic Complex, the nationally sixth-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball squad hosted the McMaster Marauders in what should have been another routine victory for the Hawks.
Instead, Laurier struggled to match the Marauders intensity and after falling into foul trouble, struggled tremendously on the boards in a 92-82 loss, just their third of the season.

After a much deserved week of rest, the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks were set for a double-header against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Athletic Complex last Friday where they hoped to extend their winning streak to five.
Although the game got off to a slow start, the action ramped up in the second half of the game which eventually saw the Lady Hawks finish with a comfortable 66-51 win to start the back-to-back weekend off on the right foot.

The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (4-2) women’s basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs (2-4) by a score of 57-33 on Friday night.
Laurier’s defence allowed the second-lowest recorded points scored by an opponent in team history. The record was established last year when the Golden Hawks held the Waterloo Warriors to just 19 points.
