Picking apart the Pigskin

    Mr. McNabb goes to Washington

On Sunday, it was reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN that the Philadelphia Eagles had traded quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a number of draft picks including a 2nd rounder this year (37th overall) and either a 2nd or 3rd rounder in 2011.

I was truly shocked at the announcement. I knew that there had been tonnes of rumors going around that McNabb would be traded but I didn't think it would actually happen, especially to a team in the same division.

Then again this is something that Philly fans had wanted to see for a long time as every year fans would clamor for McNabb to be traded. It seemed no matter what he did, McNabb could never win over the fans who Philly. Even though he took them to the NFC Championship 5 times (which is an Eagles record) and the Super Bowl...

Norv Turner is a douche bag

Of all the majors sports the NFL has the worst All-Star game. No one watches the Pro Bowl. It is sucks. That is a fact. I mean they make stupid rules like no blitzing, must play a 4-3 defense and no Wildcat or 4/5 WR formations. Basically it is a glorified scrimmage. Who wants to watch that?

This year was different though, or at least it was supposed to be.

Going into the game it was being reported that Chad Ochocinco of the Cincinnati Bengals had been practicing his kicking and punting in the hopes that he would be able to kick a field goal or maybe even punt at some point during the Pro Bowl.

Fans were getting excited about this. It is the equivalent to letting an outfielder pitch in the MLB All-Star game or letting Shaq play point guard at the NBA All-Star game. It adds excitement...

    Has Reggie Bush finally arrived?

One thing I have always found odd about sports is how a player can redefine their career with 1 game. A guy can go 6 years without being anything special, turn around and have 1 good season and become a "great player." You see it year after year in every sport.

Right now the guy that is going through a career rebirth is Reggie Bush.

Bush was drafted 2nd overall in 2006 by the New Orleans Saints and was supposed to be the next great running back in the NFL. The player that would revolutionize the game. So far in his career he has been anything but.

In 4 seasons with the Saints he has never topped more than 600 rushing yards and his receiving numbers have gone down every year he has been in the league. He did a decent job returning punts but he had fumble issues and...

    Brett Favre: give up already

Garrett Hartley's 40-yard field goal 4:45 into overtime moved the Saints into the Super Bowl and knocked the mighty Minnesota Vikings, led by Brett Favre out of the playoffs. Favre, with tears in his eyes, limped to midfield to shake hands at the end of the game. With the confetti pouring down onto the field, the 40 year old Favre hobbled away to the visitors’ locker room for possibly the last time.

I’m sure people felt badly for Favre and his teammates as they walked off the field but as I was watching this, I was extremely overjoyed. I had such a great feeling watching this 40 year old plug cry as he hobbled out of sight. Now don’t get me wrong, Favre has had an amazing career and is a lock for the Hall of Fame but his actions over recent years have forced me to lose a great...

    Super Bowl plot lines

After a 16 week regular season and 3 rounds of playoffs only 2 teams remain the Colts and the Saints. The two best teams in football will meet 2 weeks from now in Miami in the Super Bowl. This will be the first time since 1993 when the Cowboys played the Bills that both #1 seeds will be playing each other and even though I am a Jets fan I couldn’t be happier about the match up.

Before I get to the Super Bowl itself I need to talk about what happened today.

First, my Jets. Mark Sanchez played a solid game but for some reason we just couldn’t establish the run at all. Shonn Greene left the game early with an injury and that seemed to knock some life out of us. The gameplan of shutting down Wayne and Dallas worked for the most part and we forced the...

No loyalty among NCAA football coaches

NCAA football coaches are making a name for themselves as classless, greedy, spoiled and disrespectful individuals. This is a result of several coaches abandoning their current teams to pursue more prestigious or lucrative jobs at other universities or in the NFL over the last couple of months. This unfortunate trend is becoming tiresome as the sporting world is being flooded with press conferences held for jerks; for guys who didn’t uphold their end of a contract, and bailed on their former schools, team, and young student athletes. Why should these schools be left scrambling to find a coach, in a time when recruits are finalizing their decisions to attend these schools, just because some idiot wants more money or a better opportunity for themselves?

The most recent example of this has developed over the past few weeks at the University of Southern California where Pete Carroll left the Trojans and...

    J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!

"We ballers. Let's Go. People always hatin on u but we seem to prevail everytime just comin with the negativity and we will respond."

That is a tweet from Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis yesterday after a 17-14 win over the San Diego Chargers. A win that almost nobody expected and that will send the Jets to Indianapolis to play the Colts next week in the AFC Championship.

Going into the game no one was giving the Jets much of a chance, as every single member of both the CBS and FOX pregame shows picked the Chargers to win. But in the end the Jets stuck with what had worked for them all year - running the ball and playing solid defence- and got the victory. It may not have been the most exciting game but they won and that is all that matters

Shonn Green was the MVP as he...

Shanahan brings false hope to Washington

With the recent hiring of Mike Shanahan by Dan Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins, there is new hope in Redskins land for the franchise to return to the glory days of the late 80’s and early 90s. While the position now occupied by Shanahan has been a revolving door for years with coaches such as Steve Spurrier, Joe Gibbs (a second stint), and most recently Jim Zorn, none of the occupants were able to have consistent success, if any at all. Failed draft picks and free agent busts have lead to the dismissal of all of the previous coaches and as a result, Snyder has been labeled as a stupid owner who overpays for what is often a bad football team.

With Shanahan comes hope and proven success, even though it came a decade ago with a team that he inherited. One thing that Shanahan has in common...

    Marshawn Lynch steals $20

Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch is currently in the middle of six-year $18.935 million contract that he signed when he was draft in 2007. But apparently, he needed some extra cash.

    The Buffalo News reports:

The incident occurred Dec. 7, at the TGI Friday's at McKinley Mall, where the detective sergeant's wife and her girlfriend had stopped before heading home.

Crawford said his wife's girlfriend was approached at the restaurant by another member of the Bills, who struck up a conversation with the unmarried woman. At some point, Lynch arrived at the restaurant and joined them.

When the woman's friend stepped away from the table, Crawford said his wife pulled out a $20 bill to pay their check in preparation for leaving.

Lynch, 23, then grabbed the money from her hand.

"He takes the $20 out of her hand, and my wife says "What are you doing?' and Lynch...

Tim Tebow: From Legend to Question Mark

When time expired on Friday night to signal the end of the Sugar Bowl it was more than just the end of a game. It was the end to arguably one of the greatest careers in college football history.

For Florida quarterback Tim Tebow it was an almost perfect way to cap off the season and also his final year at Florida by demolishing the Cincinnati Bearcats 51-24. When interviewed after the game Tebow had this to say, "Just a great game. It was exactly how you want to go out with these seniors and these coaches in your last game and your last time together. It just really doesn't get any better than this."

But with the final whistle Tebow was transformed in an instant from a living legend to a question mark.

Throughout his entire collegiate career Tebow has heard nothing but doubts about whether or not his...

    NFL Week 14 Thoughts

To Sit or Not to Sit?

The main topic of debate right now amongst NFL analysts is whether or not the Colts and Saints should go for 16-0 or sit their starters and try and get healthy for the playoffs. People seem to be split 50-50 on the decision as some would argue that a chance at 16-0 cannot be passed up while other maintain that the ultimate goal is to win the SuperBowl not go 16-0.

I personally believe that the Saints need to go for 16-0 while the Colts should try and stay healthy.

The reason I say this is because New Orleans is a team and a city that is only 4 years removed from Hurricane Katrina and is rebuilding. They haven't been as successful as the Colts this decade and I think they need to play hard the rest of the season to build as much...

    BCS Let Down

For the past few years Boise State has been one of the best football teams in the NCAA. Since 2002 they have posted a record of 83-8 including 2 perfect seasons in 2006 and 2009. Despite their amazing record and great accomplishments they are routinely snubbed when it comes to the BCS. The reason for this is because of the strength of their schedule. Many people feel that the WAC is an inferior conference and that Boise State just beats up on weak opponents. Even the amazing 43-42 win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl in 2007 did little to help their cause.

TCU is another school that is often left out of the conversation when discussing elite teams in the NCAA. Over the past 2 years TCU has won the Mountain West Championship twice and has gone 23-1 over that stretch. Like Boise State they suffer from a 'weaker'...

    NFL Week 13 Thoughts

    A Truly Great Week

"Sports Hate" is a phrase ESPN writer Bill Simmons coined which refers to certain players that as a fan you just loathe. There may or may not be a reason for it but either way you just hate that player with every fiber of your being. You want them to fail and feel a sense of pure joy when they fall flat on their faces or choke in a big game.

I have a lot of Sports Hate and when it comes to the NFL 99% of it is directed at Brett Favre and Ben Roethlisberger. I just can't stand them. That's why this weekend was so glorious.

First we had Big Ben and the Steelers lose to the East Dillon Lions aka the Oakland Raiders and then old man Favre finally showed his true colors and had an interception riddled game against the Arizona Cardinals....

    Stupid Football Coaching Decisions

I am starting to think that there is some sort of secret award given to the coach who can make the dumbest decision in a football game. Over the past 2 weeks there have been more questionable calls and bad decisions made than I can ever remember and they culminated tonight with the 97th Grey Cup.

With only seconds left in the game the Saskatchewan Roughriders are leading the Montreal Alouettes 27-25. Montreal is lined up to kick the winning field goal. Kicker Damon Duval lines it up and boots it - wide right and Saskatchewan wins. But wait there are flags everywhere. Too many men on the field. Montreal gets another chance to make the field goal and of course you know what happens next. Duval makes it and Montreal wins the Grey Cup 28-27.

How as a coach do you let this happen? It is the biggest moment...
